The Old Club House, St. Helens

The Old Club House is a unique property on the east side of the Isle of Wight. It opened back in 1882 and was the clubhouse for the Royal Isle of Wight Golf Club for most of its history. Nowadays, however, it is a self-catering holiday cottage that has been outfitted with plenty of modern conveniences. While its remote location will appeal to many holidaymakers, you may have a weak and/or intermittent mobile signal while staying here. 

One of the cottage’s stand-out features is its veranda, from which you can enjoy lovely views of the St Helens Duver – a duver is a term used on the island to describe a low-lying piece of land that occasionally gets flooded by the sea. As many as five people can stay here and there are three bedrooms in total: a double, a twin and a single. There are two bathrooms and the shower room that’s adjoining the twin room is fully accessible. The cottage also has an open-plan living/dining area and a kitchen. There’s a garden that’s enclosed but isn’t fully private right now as the hedge has been removed.

The Old Club House is a great option if you want peace and relaxation, but still want to have the Isle of Wight’s many attractions within easy reach. Visit the nearby villages of Bembridge & St Helens and take some time to explore the coast. Drive to the central town of Newport and discover its many independent shops and well-known retailers. There are also plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants welcoming visitors and locals alike. Be sure to visit The Needles, a trio of chalk stacks rising nearly 100 feet out of the sea, and stop by the popular amusement park Blackgang Chine if you’re after some thrills and spills.
