You may well be tempted to spend most of your time in this unique property, but there’s a lot to see both on your doorstep and further afield. Take time to explore Layer de la Haye and the nearby city of Colchester. Head to the nearby Needle Eye Woods for invigorating woodland walks and take in the sights of the many ancient trees that can be found here. Head to Colchester, see its surviving Roman walls and explore the high street with its many shops and restaurants. There’s also Mersea Island, where you can practise water-based activities such as paddle boarding, boating and free swimming.

Colchester Zoo – Set in 60 acres of picturesque parkland is Colchester Zoo, which is home to around 160 animal species. It’s over 60 years old and has a great reputation thanks to its animal collection, cleanliness, facilities and the extra experiences it offers.
Colchester City – With a heritage of over 2,000 years, the city of Colchester is a point of interest for history fans. It claims to have been the very first city in Britain and while it has its fair share of historical attractions, it also has many modern cultural sites and places to eat, drink and shop.
